With the distinction of being the world's oldest club still playing association football, Sheffield FC has historically attracted interest far in excess of most clubs of their size and amateur status.
The club declined as a force in the English game following their refusal in 1885 to adopt professionalism but continues to prosper in their role as an important local community club. Sheffield joined the Yorkshire League in 1949 and would spend the next few decades moving back and forth between its top two divisions.
1957 was an important year in the club's history as Sheffield celebrated their centenary with an event in their home city attended by the Duke of Edinburgh and Sir Stanley Rous.
