Much-travelled Croatian coach Tomislav Ivic took charge of Benfica for the 1992-93 season and began the campaign with a number of new arrivals including Abel Xavier, Hélder, Carlos Mozer, João Pinto, and Aleksandr Mostovoi.
The new team took a while to settle down, however, and Ivic lasted just a few months before being replaced by Toni. Form improved greatly in the second half of the season, and the goals of the Brazilian Isaias inspired the Lisbon giants to win a record 22nd Taça de Portugal.
