As the 1970s got underway FC Porto was a club ready to burst out of the shadows of the Lisbon giants. But under new coach Paulo Amaral the 1971-72 season didn’t bring that hoped for step forward: Porto finished back in 5th position and their wait to win another championship would last at least another 12 months. Notable FC Porto players of the era included young midfielder Rodolfo Reis, forward Lemos and the striker Abel Miglietti.
The club was starting to forge a solid reputation for developing great young talent, a policy that would bring much success in the years to come.
