Although finishing a dozen points adrift of Arsenal and Liverpool in the League, Forest did end their 1988-89 season in an impressive third place. Nigel Clough led the team's scoring charts once again with 14 goals playing in a team for which goals came easily from all over the pitch: midfielders Steve Hodge, Garry Parker, Neil Webb all contributed respectable goal totals this year as did the ever-prolific Stuart Pearce from left back.

The League Cup seemed to bring the best out in Forest during this era, and after overcoming Chester City, Coventry, Leicester City, QPR, and Bristol City; Forest traveled to Wembley for the Final against the holders Luton Town. On the day, Brian Clough's team was just too strong and two-goal Nigel Clough was decisive in Forest's 3-1 win.

Good progress was made to the semi-final of the FA Cup too, though football was quickly forgotten once the tragic events of that shocking match at Hillsborough started to unfold.
