The first half of the 1970s was hardly memorable for the Colombian national team, but there were moments of interest outside the failed World Cup qualification campaigns. A team led by the attacking flair of Ernesto Diaz and Willington Ortiz participated in the 1972 Olympic football tournament, only to be drawn with and duly eliminated by powerful East Germany and Poland.
Diaz and Ortiz would be the inspiration again three years later as Colombia surprised Uruguay to reach the Final of the 1975 Copa America, only to surprisingly lose to outsiders Peru.
