In 1982, just four seasons after winning election to the Football League, Wigan Athletic earned a first-ever promotion from the fourth to the third tier. Former European Cup-winning defender Larry Lloyd had arrived as player manager a few months before the end of the previous season, and his impact was felt fully during the successful 1981-82 campaign which brought a fine third-placed finish.
The 19 League goals from veteran striker Les Bradd drove the promotion push and he also scored in a famous 4-2 League Cup defeat of Chelsea earlier in the campaign.
