The 1984-85 season was one of change for Benfica with new manager Tomislav Ivic departing early in the campaign and being replaced by Pal Csernai. New signings Jorge Silva, Wando & Adelino Nunes arrived to replace the departing Fernando Chalana and Glenn Stromberg.
These changes affected the Lisbon giants' momentum and meant they were unable to win a third successive Primeira Divisao title. Some respite came with a 19th Taca de Portugal success and a 3-1 victory over FC Porto in the Final.
The two-goal hero of that match was the Danish striker Michael Manniche who was emerging as a potent goal threat for the club, scoring 28 in all competitions. He was ably supported by the long-serving stalwarts Nene and Carlos Manuel who both contributed double-figure goal totals.
