Playing under the name of Betis Balompié with royal patronage canceled until after the Spanish Civil War, the 1934-35 season was a historic one for the club as it won its only La Liga title.
The team was coached by the Irishman Patrick O’Connell and its star player was Spanish international Simón Lecue, an attacking midfielder who scored 9 goals in 21 games during this title-winning season. The championship was won thanks to a resolute defense and eventually secured in some style on the 28th April 1935 with a crushing 5–0 win over Racing Santander.
