The 1972-73 season brought the novelty of European football for FC Sochaux-Montbeliard for the first time thanks to a third placed Ligue 1 finish in the previous campaign. The club's UEFA Cup journey got off to the best possible start when Pierre Lechantre scored after just 7 minutes at the Stade Auguste-Bonal and gave the French side the lead against the Danes of BK Frem. Unfortunately the visitors recovered strongly and scored three times to take a commanding lead into the second leg. Andre Perrin scored a late goal in Denmark for Sochaux, but it was little more than a consolation with Frem having already scored twice to extend their aggregate lead.
Domestically Paul Barrett's side failed to match the heights of the previous season, and Sochaux finished their Ligue 1 campaign in 11th place.
